Did your pet go missing over the holiday weekend? According to PetFinder.com more pets are lost on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year. We’re enjoying time outdoors, paying less attention and of course watching or shooting off fireworks which don’t mix with pets. Now the humane society tells us just how many they took in over the weekend.“We are looking for our lost Chihuahua. She’s been lost since the 3rd.” Colorado Springs resident, Ashley McCullough added, “She dug out of our backyard. She’s five pounds, all white with a black spot over her right eye.”And she’s not the only one missing her furry friend.“From July 1st through yesterday, July 6th we had taken in 119 stray dogs andagain as of the end of the day yesterday, July 6th we had returned 71 of those dogs back to their families,” said Gretchen Pressley, Community Relations Manager at the humane society of the Pikes Peak Region.But there could be many reasons for man’s best friend to go missing.“She is a rescue so she is very skittish and afraid of loud noises and people she doesn’t know and things like that,” said McCullough.And if you can’t find Fido, it’s important to check with the shelters as soon as possible or he could end up on the adoption list.Pressley said, “We hold all strays for a five day waiting period while we attempt to find their owners using any tools we can such as tags on the dog, a micro-chip, we can trace that back and hope that that information is updated.”But what happens if you find a stray?“At least bring in the stray so we can check them for a microchip and fill out a found report online at HSPPR.org to let us know that you’re keeping the dog so we can put out the word to anyone looking for animal that matches that description,” said Pressley.“I just want her home,” added McCullough. “My nephews and my husband miss her too.”The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region posts pictures of all of the animals turned into them on their website and they say if you’re looking for a lost pet your best bet is to sort through those photos at www.HSPPR.org.
